Lotte Reiniger - Hansel and Gretel
I'm still debating whether or not I'm going to go with idea and if i have the time/
.
a short film, inspired by lotte reiniger, about a city built underground (inspired by islais creek) because of war and destruction. People have then moved within the earth. I'm considering 'earth dwellers' past and present... thinking about settlements like the Anasazi cliff dwellers to a revival in earth living, eco-homes that are built, partially underground.
I want to present a utopian picture of islais creek. Influenced by earth dwellings, subterranean homes, an 'eco-concious' idea of working with a landscape as opposed to against it.

concept for midterm project
![]() | ||
This is a first attempt at using Adobe Illustrator (bare with me). The idea for half of the project is: constructing an acrylic box then filling it with found objects from the creek. On the outside of the box, we would draw maps indicating sections of the creek (preferably on vellum or a semi-translucent material). on the map we would highlight zones and areas of interest to us as interesting facts or information. |

we're coming close to our midterm due date. debating we have desires of building a two dimensional topographic map utilizing materials found from glen canyon park. i'm interested in the transformation of found objects such as natural materials and trash as a unified piece of the park. i'm still a little inexperienced with google maps and google earth. the more i've practiced, the better. I know it'll be second nature sooner than later. somehow i'd like to incorporate sound. if not in this project, the next would be ideal.

reclaimed tree hut... incomplete...
Robert and I came across partially constructed - or deconstructed - structures in the presidio. With hundreds of branches around us, we couldn't help but partake in the frame work. Turned out to be
a long, 3 hour, sweaty, muscle-building,
minor attempt at our first "earthwork".

what lies beneath

1890's map of San Francisco. Original creeks represented by blue, marshes by green, and the masses of pink running along the coast of the right half of the city illustrate modern day land fill. Because of rapid development, urbanization, and an accelerated growth of population, many of the natural watersheds have been covered and built over - severely altering San Francisco's ecosystems. Islais creek was once the largest body of water, covering approximately 3.5 miles from Glen Park to the bay, reaching from Point Portrero to Hunter's Point.
